Responsibilities:
The Water Quality Committee (WQC) is responsible for monitoring the water quality of Big and Little Glen Lakes. The GLA Board of Directors and membership are appraised of monitored conditions on a regular basis. The WQC keeps records of the parameters that best describe quality conditions so trends can determine if favorable or unfavorable changes are occurring. The committee also assesses factors that affect water quality and recommends best practices to riparians to assure high quality lake water conditions are maintained.

WQC members conduct regular tests as part of the Cooperative Lakes Monitoring Program (CLMP) administrated through the Michigan Lake & Stream Associations, Inc. (ML&SA). The committee also works together with the National Lakeshore, testing parameters not included in the CLMP program. In addition the Glen Lake Association financially supports the Leelanau Conservancy Watershed Council, through which the WQC solicits suggestions and works in conjunction with them in our monitoring efforts. The WQC works to coordinate all the above activities.

The WQC has also developed a Glen Lake Crystal River Watershed Landowners Manual and corresponding Stewardship Checklist. These two documents address specific do’s and don’ts as it relates to improving water quality. They provide simple things we all can do to improve and protect our beautiful watershed.

Monitoring takes place from May through September each year. The monitoring conducted or contracted by the WQC on Big and Little Glen Lake is as follows:

The Water Quality Committee is looking for volunteers to provide water craft to conduct its water quality testing for 2006. Pontoons are ideal, but most any boat will do. Can you assist? Contact Mike Litch at 231-334-3612.
