GLA Treasurer, Roy Pentilla, happened to be walking near the Narrows bridge when he captured these shots with his IPhone. Nice timing, Roy!!

Fisheries Survey Begins Today

The DNR Fisheries Division will begin a fisheries survey of the Glen Lake system today.  They will be surveying Big and Little Glen, and the Fisher Lakes for the next two weeks. If any of you are interested in observing the sampling efforts please feel free to approach any of the DNR boats and they will be happy to discuss the sampling techniques and talk about what they have caught.

If you have any questions about the survey please call  Todd Kalish, Michigan Department of Natural Resources, Fisheries Division at 231-775-9727, ext 6070.

What’s Biting

Not much if you ask local anglers.

Ice shanties have been pulled from the lake after a recent warm-up created unsafe ice conditions.  Recent high winds have caused some cracks in the ice and some locations may have 5 inches while others may only have 2 inches of ice. Snow on the lake makes it difficult to see the areas of thin ice. Anglers should avoid driving quads or snowmobiles on the ice.

According to an article in The Leelanau Enterprise, Bob Smith, owner of the Sportsmen’s Shop in Glen Arbor warns to be careful. A fisherman smashed his spud through just two inches of ice over the weekend well out on the lake, which also shattered his believe that the ice was safe. “The ice, for  whatever reason, is very unstable on big Glen Lake. I don’t know if it is all the snow causing slush, or what.”

Fishing on Little Glen Lake has been poor even where safe. Shanty owner Annette  Lewis has caught only two perch in eight different trips to the shanty she typically spends time in with friends and family.

She reported to the Enterprise that she was fishing with a friend who brought an underwater fish camera and that they “saw just a couple little, tiny perch on the bottom.” Some are blaming construction noise at the Narrows Bridge. Others theorize that the perch have been locked into Big Glen by the silt barrier put up by MDOT at the construction site that prevents fish movement into Little Glen.

Not all fishing news is bad, however. Jason Gibson took home the Glen Arbor  February 14 Perch Fishing Contest with  a 12,7/8″ perch.  Second place went to Jeff Tuardek with a 12, 5/8” fish. Congratulations Jason and Jeff!
