January 25th Meeting on Septic Regulation

There will be a meeting January 25th  at 10:00 a.m. in the  Community Meeting Room of the Leelanau County Government Building regarding septic regulations.

John Popa from the Leelanau Road commission met with the Health Department Board  last spring to recommend changes to the requirements by the Health Department that permit drainfields. In the past, mound systems in drainfields were not permitted. Then the regulations changed and two foot mounds were allowed if your house was built before a certain date. Mr Popa feels this change was arbitrary and capricious. The Health Department Board asked that Bill Crawford take a look at the regulations and see what could be done. Mr. Popa called Bill Crawford last fall and was told that he would like to revisit the regulations but would like more public input on the subject of permitting mounds.

Please tell your friends and neighbors about this important meeting.

GLA Invests in New Water Level Equipment

The Glen Lake Association can now read lake level every 15 minutes, if desired,  from several computers around the lake.  The home page on this website now shows the automated reading each day.

This fall the Water Level Committee (WLC) installed a pressure transducer in a pipe about 3 ½ feet under the water at the narrows.  The transducer reads the water pressure due to the height of the water above it.  It is wired to a data logger which converts the water pressure to a water height and sends the information via cell phone to a software program designed & installed by new WLC volunteer Cal Killen on the GLA computer, his computer, and that of  fellow WLC volunteer Bill Meserve.  The water height is then converted to height above sea level. WLC volunteer, Bruce Lichliter, can now cut down on his daily reading of the narrows staff gage. And, at this time of year with challenging winter conditions, that is a good thing!

The new equipment cost about $4,000 plus an additional $10 per month for the AT&T cell data collection.  The Committee’s next project is to work with the US Geological Survey to automate the river reading and get the funds from them to pay for it.
